Engineering
the heartbeat of
African rail.
Global Railway Engineering designs and builds heavy-haul wagons, bogies and locomotives — using the Scheffel self-steering bogie technology that has reduced wheel wear by over 500% and fuel use by up to 10% on the corridors of Southern Africa.

Unmatched versatility
One bogie.
Every corridor.
From 1000mm narrow gauge to 1676mm broad gauge. From 16.5t to 37.5t axle loads. The Scheffel Self-Steering Bogie adapts to any heavy-haul operation — iron ore, coal, minerals, containers, tankers, or passengers.
- Sishen–Saldanha iron ore line (world's heaviest)
- Ermelo–Richard's Bay coal corridor
- Operations in USA, Sweden, New Zealand, Jordan, Brazil, Ghana
- Manufacturing ties in China since the early 1980s
- Guinness World Record holder for heavy-haul rail achievement

- 01
Designed in-house
Every wagon, bogie and locomotive overhaul starts on our own boards — modern CAD plus FE analysis against AAR specifications. No off-the-shelf compromises.
- 02
Built locally
Carbon steel and stainless steel construction, manufactured at our South African facility. ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 3834-2 certified, B-Corp accredited, “Locally Made and Proud of it.”
- 03
Run for decades
25 to 35 year life cycle on the wagons we put into traffic. Maintenance cycles minimised by Scheffel self-steering bogies — up to 70% less workshop time over the life of the fleet.
- 04
Refurbished
When the time comes we strip, re-engineer and recommission the fleet — either at our works or on-site at the customer's depot — and put it back to work for another life cycle.
Cross-anchor self-steering technology
50+ years of refinement · Guinness World Record holder
Heartbeat of South African rail
since 1975.
Invented by Dr. Herbert Scheffel. Refined over 50 years. The single largest contribution South African engineering has made to heavy-haul economics — now available in the new Super Light range (MKV-SL & MKVII-SL). We build it, refurbish it, and adapt it for new fleets every year.

Capabilities
Six disciplines, one OEM.
From a clean-sheet wagon to a strip-and-rebuild on a legacy fleet — everything happens under our own roof.
-
In-house wagon design
Clean-sheet wagon design using modern CAD. FE analysis against AAR specifications. Tankers, hoppers, container flats, ore wagons.
-
Scheffel bogies
Self-steering bogie engineering — the heartbeat of South African rail since 1975. Up to 70% maintenance reduction on the fleets we equip.
-
Locomotive overhaul
Heavy refurbishment programmes returning end-of-life locomotives to traffic. Engine to electrical to bodywork.
-
Castings
Bogie casting development to AAR specification — keeping legacy fleets running long after the original OEM has gone.
-
Life-cycle support
25 to 35 year operational life. Spares, maintenance, condition monitoring — for as long as the rolling stock is in revenue service.
-
Sustainability advisory
Decarbonisation roadmap for rail operators. Lower fuel, lower wheel & rail consumption, lower CO₂ — three principles, decades of evidence.
